Phillies Claim Nelson Figueroa

The Philadelphia Phillies have claimed starting pitcher Nelson Figueroa off waivers from the New York Mets. Nelson, who was put on waivers on Friday by the Mets, was considering playing in Japan if a major league deal did not materialize.

In 16 appearances with the New York Mets last year, 10 of which were starts, Figueroa pitched 70.1 innings while having a record of 3-8 with an ERA of 4.09. Earlier in 2009, Figueroa spent time with the Mets triple A affiliate, where he went 7-5 with a 2.25 ERA.

With the Phillies sustaining injuries to multiple pitchers on their staff including Joe Blanton, Brad Lidge, and J.C. Romero it is likely that Figueroa will have some early value for the Phillies as a swingman between the rotation and bullpen.
