Rays Sign Cuban OF/1B Leslie Anderson

The Tampa Bay Rays have signed Cuban defector Leslie Anderson to a four-year contract worth a minimum of $1,725,000.

Anderson, 28, hit .381 in his last year in Cuban ball. He also hit 13 homers.

With strong plate discipline, Anderson walked more than he struck out in his Cuban career.

It’s always difficult to project Cuban players. The hype usually exceeds the on-field results.

Still, the Rays’ fanbase has reacted positively to the move, and most reports of Anderson indicate he could be worth much more than his contract will pay him.

He’s starting the year in extended spring training. His eventual minor league assignment has yet to be determined.
