The Royals have designated right-handed pitcher Roman Colon for assignment following a brutal start to the year for the 30-year-old.
Colon had only gotten six outs across five outings, while allowing four runs on five hits and two walks.
The righty has also pitched for the Braves and Tigers, and has been in the majors off and on since 2004.
He’s made 113 relief appearances and eight starts, with a 5.12 ERA overall. He posted a 4.83 ERA last year in 43 relief appearances for Kansas City.
The righthander throws in the 92-95 mph range with his fastball, but the pitch lacks movement, and his slider is just an average pitch. Colon also throws a nifty splitter, but doesn’t use the pitch as much as he should.
Wally Fish of Kings of Kauffman (and Call to the Pen) had this to say on the move:
"“For all the talk of new pitches, impressive outings in Arizona, and for everything else, Dayton Moore and the Royals have finally realized the obvious. Roman Colon is not good enough to pitch in the major leagues…However, I find it hard to believe his time in the Royals organization has come to an end. I fully expect him to clear waivers and find his way to the Omaha bullpen.”"
When you stick out as a poor pitcher while playing for the Royals, that’s not exactly a ringing endorsement. This could be the end of Colon’s big league career.
