After a slew of moves over the weekend, Memorial Day itself was relatively quiet and yet this is a day overdue.
There was a minor trade made on Monday. The Pittsburgh Pirates traded C-Josue Peley (22) to the Boston Red Sox to acquire OF-Jonathan Van Every (30). Things have essentially come full circle since the Red Sox traded a player to be named later to the Pirates back on April 24th to acquire Van Every in the first place. With the imminent returns of Mike Cameron and Jacoby Ellsbury, he became expendable and Boston designated him for assignment on May 21st. So now Van Every heads to Pittsburgh to provide OF depth. He appeared in 21 games for the Red Sox and hit 0.211/.286/.421 in 21 plate appearances.
The other player in the deal, Josue Peley was repeating high-A this season in the Pirates system. In 72 plate appearances he was hitting a very light 0.179/.222/.239 for the West Virginia Power. To find a season where he hit above 0.200 you’d have to go back to 2007 when he hit 0.252/.290/.348 for the GCL Pirates in rookie ball. Clearly a non-prospect, his career line in 565 minor league plate appearances is just 0.202/.252/.257.
