Roster Moves (6/6): Brent Brewer walks away from baseball

Another “catch-up” edition of Roster Moves composed and published for posterity if nothing else.  The process of catching up has caused me to settle on a couple things.  First, I’m going to stick to the recent format of breaking out the moves by division.  Second, even when I am trying to get through a day quickly I plan on going a little more in depth on at least one of the moves to break up the inherent monotony and tedium involved in simply recounting transactions.

In this edition, of the 11 players involved in moves on June 6th, two received a little extra attention (details after the jump).

AL Central:

The Detroit Tigers designated SS-Adam Everett (33) for assignment.  Such is your fate when you hit 0.185/.221/.247 and manage to drop your career OPS+ to 66.  At that level of production, not even stellar defense (10.2 UZR/150 in 2010) can make a player valuable. Especially when that player was signed to a one year $1.55 million contract.

AL East:

No moves to report.

AL West:

Shoulder fatigue has landed Seattle Mariners RHP-Doug Fister (26) on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 1st.  LHP-Luke French (24) was called up to take his place on the roster.

NL Central:

The Milwaukee Brewers placed RHP-Todd Coffey (29) on the 15-day DL with a bruised thumb.  The move was made retroactive to May 30th.

In other Brew-Crew news, 2006 2nd round pick, SS-Brent Brewer (22) left the organization and will head to the University of Tennessee on a football scholarship.  Since joining the ranks of professional baseball in 2006 after signing, his performance has steadily declined.  That is until this season when he was putting up the best stat line (0.275/.310/.350) of his career in Double-A Huntsville. Despite the fact that his dreams of playing major league baseball didn’t work out, it’s hard to argue his decision to give it a go after completing high school.  He returns to college, still in his early 20s and $600,000 richer.

NL East:

Atlanta Braves minor leaguer RHP-James Parr (24) underwent Tommy John surgery.

The New York Mets optioned C-Omir Santos (29) to Buffalo.

The Florida Marlins made a number of moves.  They optioned RHP-Tim Wood (27) and OF-Brett Carroll (27) to New Orleans.  They also designated 1B/3B-Mike Lamb (34) for assignment.  With several roster spots opened, Florida called up IF/OF-Emilio Bonifacio (25) and RHP-Rick VandenHurk (25) from Triple-A.

NL West:

No moves to report.
