Saturday’s roster moves were marked by two noteworthy trades, the completion of a minor deal, an injury to a former MVP, and the season debut of a highly regarded prospect.  SBPAXAAD7GB3

Trade Time:

The Boston Red Sox acquired UTIL-Eric Patterson (27) from the Oakland Athletics.  In exchange the A’s received LHP-Fabian Williamson (21).  Our own Nathaniel Stoltz published some in depth trade analysis of this deal which you can read here.  Swingin’ A’s lead writer, Joseph Lopez, also did a quick write-up on the trade.

The Cleveland Indians dealt 1B-Russell Branyan (34) to the Seattle Mariners and, in return, received OF-Ezequiel Carrera (23) and SS-Juan Diaz (21).  Reactions and analysis to this deal can be found in multiple places on our network including Nathaniel’s take on CttP, two posts on Sodo Mojo, and one over on Deep Left Field.

To complete the Jorge Padilla trade from June 19th, the Toronto Blue Jays acquired RHP-Clint Everts (25) from the New York Mets.

AL Central:

The Minnesota Twins optioned RHP-Jeff Manship (25) to Rochester.  In a corresponding move, LHP-Jose Mijares (25) was activated from the restricted list.  Mijares was placed on the bereavement list back on June 18th due to a death in the family.  He was moved to the restricted list on the 25th as his return to the team was delayed.

AL East:

New York Yankees C-Chad Moeller (35), who was DFA’d by the team on June 21st, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.  Moeller had the opportunity to become a free agent but showed a bit of loyalty, and common sense, by remaining in the Yankees organization.

Thanks to his strained oblique, the Baltimore Orioles placed OF-Luis Montanez (28) on the 15-day disabled list.  The move was made retroactive to June 21st.  RHP-Brad Bergesen (24) was called up from Norfolk to take his place on the roster.

Dustin Pedroia (26) fouled a ball off his left foot in Friday’s game against the Giants.  The result was a non-displaced fracture which has landed him on the 15-day disabled list.  Newly acquired Eric Patterson is expected to get a bulk of the playing time at 2B during the next six weeks or until Pedroia returns.  SS-Angel Sanchez (26) was also called up from Pawtucket.

AL West:

No moves to report.

NL Central:

The Chicago Cubs optioned RHP-Jeff Stevens (26) to Iowa and called up RHP-Brian Schlitter (24) to take his place.

The Pittsburgh Pirates optioned RHP-Steven Jackson (28) to Triple-A and called up RHP-Daniel McCutchen (27) from Indianapolis to take his place.

NL East:

No moves to report.

NL West:

The San Francisco Giants optioned RHP-Joe Martinez (27) to Fresno and called up prospect LHP-Madison Bumgarner (20). Madison made the start on Saturday and lasted 7.0 innings against the Boston Red Sox and took the loss.  He allowed 5 H, 4 ER, 1 BB and 2 HR while striking out 5 in 96 pitches.
