Roster Moves (6/29): Joel Zumaya, Chase Utley, and V-Mart hit the DL

You learn something new everyday and today I learned about the olecranon.  Check out the moves after the jump to find out why.

AL Central:

The Detroit Tigers placed RHP-Joel Zumaya (25) on 15-day disabled list.  He has been diagnosed with a non-displaced fracture of the olecranon and is lost for the rest of the season, which doesn’t come as a shock after watching the video.  A bit of positive news is the belief that he will be able to avoid surgery, but still this is a blow to Detroit and the talented but oft-injured reliever.  To take Zumaya’s place on the roster, the Tigers called up RHP-Casey Fien (26) from Toledo.

The Cleveland Indians outrighted RHP-Shane Lindsay (25) to Akron (AA).

AL East:

Thanks to a fracture in his thumb, the Boston Red Sox placed C-Victor Martinez (31) on the 15-day DL.  The move was made retroactive to June 28th.  In need of catching depth, the team called up Gustavo Molina (28) from Pawtucket to back up Jason Varitek.

The Tampa Bay Rays designated 1B/3B-Hank Blalock (29) for assignment and activated OF-Gabe Kapler (34) from the 15-day DL.

AL West:

The Seattle Mariners activated C-Josh Bard (32) from the 15-day disabled list and designated C-Eliezer Alfonzo (31) for assignment.

NL Central:

The Houston Astros signed SS-Ramon Vazquez (33) to a minor league contract and assigned him to Round Rock.  Elbow tendinitis forced the team to place RHP-Jeff Fulchino (30) on the 15-day DL and call up RHP-Casey Daigle (29) from Triple-A.

The St. Louis Cardinals placed 3B-David Freese (27) on the 15-day disabled list.  The move was made retroactive to June 28th and was the result of a sprained ankle.  RHP-Fernando Salas (25) was called up from Memphis yet again.

The Chicago Cubs called up LHP-James Russell (24) and RHP-Jeff Stevens (26) from Iowa.  They also placed LHP-John Grabow (31) on the 15-day DL with a sprained knee.

NL East:

The Philadelphia Phillies placed 2B-Chase Utley (31) and Placido Polanco (34) on the 15-day DL.  For Utley the injury is a ligament sprain in his thumb and for Polanco, who’s DL assignment was made retroactive to June 26th, the root of the problem is a sore left elbow.  As a result, 3B-Greg Dobbs (31) and SS-Brian Bocock (25) were called up from Lehigh Valley.  In other Phillies news, the team released OF-Willy Taveras (28).

The New York Mets signed C-Michael Barrett (33) to a minor league contract.  The team also placed pitching prospect, RHP-Jenrry Mejia (20) on the minor league disabled list with a strain in his pitching shoulder.

The Atlanta Braves activated OF-Matt Diaz (32) from the 15-day disabled list.  On the minor league side of things, they promoted pitching prospect, LHP-Mike Minor (22) from Mississippi (AA) to Gwinnett.

NL West:

The Colorado Rockies called up OF-Dexter Fowler (24) and optioned 2B-Chris Nelson (24) to Colorado Springs.
