Today is a special day in the baseball world as July 2nd marks the start of another international signing period. As news comes out about the international guys signing, I will pass it along here in Roster Moves in a dedicated section. This was a long one so lets get right to it!
(moves after the jump)
AL Central:
The Chicago White Sox optioned LHP-Randy Williams (34) to Charlotte and activated RHP-Bobby Jenks (29) from the Family Medical Emergency List.
The Detroit Tigers called up LHP-Daniel Schlereth (24) from Toledo.
The Kansas City Royals released LHP-Adam Bostick (27).
AL East:
The Toronto Blue Jays placed RHP-Shawn Marcum (28) on the 15-day disabled list. The diagnosis of inflammation in this pitching elbow is a bit concerning based on his previous elbow problems and his 2008 Tommy John surgery. Concerns aside, the expectation is that this is a minor problem and that he will be activated shortly after the All-Star break. In other Jays news, they team called up LHP-Marc Rzepczynski (24) and optioned 3B-Jarrett Hoffpauir (27) to Las Vegas. Finally OF-Jeremy Reed (29) has refused Toronto’s minor league assignment and has elected to become a free agent.
The New York Yankees called up RHP-Dustin Moseley (28) and optioned LHP-Boone Logan (25) to Scranton Wilkes/Barre.
The Boston Red Sox designated INF-Tug Hulett (27) for assignment and called up 2B-Niuman Romero (25) from Pawtucket. The team also placed RHP-Manny Delcarmen (28) and C-Jason Varitek (38) on the 15-day disabled list. Both DL moves were made retroactive to June 1st. Delcarmen landed on the DL with a forearm strain while Varitek’s broken foot will keep him sidelined for at least a month. RHP-Robert Manuel (26) was called up from Pawtucket to bolster the bullpen.
AL West:
The Oakland Athletics claimed RHP-Jeff Lyman (23) off of waivers from the Atlanta Braves. For more on this move, check out Swingin’ A’s.
The Texas Rangers optioned C-Max Ramirez (25) to Oklahoma City.
The Los Angeles Angels optioned RHP-Trevor Bell (23) to Salt Lake and called up RHP-Rich Thompson (26). The Angels also signed two of their first round picks. RHP-Cam Bedrosian, selected 29th overall, signed for $1.116 million and OF-Chevez Clarke, selected 30th overall, signed for $1.089 million.
NL Central:
The Cincinnati Reds placed RHP-Sam LeCure (26) on the minor league disabled list. The injury in question is a strained groin.
The St. Louis Cardinals have once again optioned RHP-Fernando Salas (25) to Memphis and called up SS-Tyler Greene (26). Having another utility player is all fine and good, but what exactly does Salas have to do to stick in the majors? He made his major league debut on May 28th and has six appearances spread over three separate stints with the team. In 7.1 innings pitched he has a 1.23 ERA, 0.82 WHIP and 4 strikeouts to go with 1 walk. All I am saying is give Fernando a real chance …
The Houston Astros (28) optioned OF-Jason Bourgeois (28) to Round Rock.
The Pittsburgh Pirates activated RHP-Charlie Morton (28) from the disabled list and optioned him to Indianapolis.
NL East:
The Washington Nationals activated C-Carlos Maldonado (31) from the 15-day DL and optioned him to Syracuse. The Nats also signed RHP-Orlando Hernandez (44) to a minor league contract.
The Florida Marlins outrighted RHP-Scott Strickland (34) to New Orleans and activated RHP-Clay Hensley (30) from the 15-day disabled list.
The Philadelphia Phillies released RHP-Josh Fogg (33).
The New York Mets signed RHP-Brian Bruney (28) to a minor league contract.
NL West:
The San Fransisco Giants activated SS-Ryan Rohlinger (26) from the 15-day DL and optioned him to Fresno. They also released SS-Angel Berroa (32).
International Signings:
The Chicago Cubs signed Dominican SS-Daniel Sanchez.
The Philadelphia Phillies signed Venezuelan SS-Fransisco Silva (16) for around $200,000.
The Minnesota Twins signed Dominican LHP-Reyson Zoquier.
The Oakland Athletics signed LHP-Anderson Mata (17), 3B-Renato Nunez (16) and LHP-Jose Torres (16). All three players are from Venezuela.
