Astros Lose Lee

Astros left fielder Carlos Lee was carted off the field during today’s 5-0 win over the Milwaukee Brewers.  Lee sustained an injury to his ribs when he and shortstop Angel Sanchez collided.

The teammates were tracking a shallow fly ball hit by Mark Kotsay in the top of the 7th inning.  The two made sliding attempts on the ball, resulting in Sanchez’s knees crashing hard into the ribs of Lee.

After exiting the field on a cart, Lee was taken to a nearby hospital where it was determined that he had suffered a left rib contusion.  Lee is currently listed as day to day by the club.

Entering the 7th inning, the game was going very well for Lee and the Astros.  Young starter Bud Norris had pitched 6 shutout frames and Lee contributed two hits including a 3 run homerun.  The slugger showed signs of breaking out of his early season slump before sustaining his injury.

Before his 2 for 3 day, Lee had seen his average dip below the .200 mark.  Lee entered Sunday’s game with 4 hits over his previous 40 at bats, managing only a single homerun during that stretch.

The Astros are glad the injury is not more severe, but the team will likely be without their slugger tomorrow as Lee is spending the night in a local hospital.
