Cardinals Freese to DL

A day after being hit by a pitch, the St. Louis Cardinals announced they are placing third baseman David Freese on the 15 day DL.  Freese’s hand was broken Sunday when he was beaned by Atlanta’s Scott Linebrink.

The Cards are projecting they will be without Freese for 9 to 12 weeks.  Surgery has been scheduled for Tuesday; Freese will have a plate inserted to aid the healing process.

Freese has played well for St. Louis so far this season, his average sitting at .356.  The third baseman has homered twice and driven in 14 runs in 25 games.

Freese is certainly no stranger to the DL.  Last season he sustained separate injuries to both of his ankles, each requiring surgery.  The injuries limited him to only 70 games.

St. Louis has recalled utility man Allen Craig to fill the open roster spot.  The team will likely use a combination of Nick Punto, Daniel Descalso and Tyler Greene to cover third while Freese is on the mend.
