Pair of O’s to DL

The Baltimore Orioles have announced today that Brian Roberts and Derrek Lee will be placed on the team’s disabled list.

Roberts missed last night’s game with recurring headaches and Lee was removed from Monday’s contest because of a strained oblique.

The O’s are hoping to put Roberts on the new 7 day DL for concussion symptoms.  The second baseman has been having headaches since sliding into first during Monday night’s game in Boston.

Though Roberts has struggled this season, only managing a line of .221/.273/.331, the O’s depend on him to ignite their lineup.  The team is very different without him at the top of the order, and the they would be elated if the league allows Roberts to join the 7 day DL instead of the 15.

Like Roberts, and most other Orioles, Lee has also not had a very successful year at the plate.  He was one of several veterans brought in to add stability to the roster and specifically a position that has been a black hole of late for the Birds.

The team has already watched another starter, J.J. Hardy, miss a month due to an injured oblique.  Lee is eligible to come off the DL June 1st, but he likely won’t be available until the middle of next month.

The O’s have recalled pitchers Chris Jakubauskas and Troy Patton to fill the two vacant roster spots.

You’re right, 2 pitchers for 2 position players wouldn’t normally make sense, but after last night’s 15 inning affair the team needed some extra relief in the pen.  They will likely be making a roster move for another position player in the next few days.

Recent AAA call up Brandon Snyder will get his first start of the 2011 season tonight at first and utility man Robert Andino will fill in for Roberts at second.
