Brandon Inge has landed on the Tigers 15 day disabled list after the team discovered the third baseman had mononucleosis. The move is retroactive to June 2.
Detroit is hoping that Inge’s 2011 struggles can at least be partially attributed to the virus.
The 34 year old has only been able to maintain a line of .211/.279/.286 this year.
Looking over everything, Inge is really not drastically off of his career average (.236) or OBP (.306). Where he’s dropped off this year is in the power department. Inge has only 9 extra base hits, including a single home run, after 161 at bats.
Originally known for his defensive versatility, Inge has been Detroit’s primary third baseman over the past 3 seasons.
Catcher Omir Santos has been called up to take Inge’s roster spot.
Detroit has third baseman Danny Worth on its active roster, but he is seen as more of a defensive replacement. Don Kelly has started 7 games at third this year for the Tigers and I would guess he will be Inge’s primary replacement at the hot corner.
