10th Overall: Padres Select 3B Cory Spangenberg

The Padres have selected from Indian State College in Florida and have picked up a solid infielder. The first plus in Spangenberg is the fact that he has been using wood bats…and he can hit.  At the junior college level this season he posted a .477 average and boasted the sixth best average in the nation for Division 1 junior colleges.

Tools:

Spangenberg is not known for his power, he hits the ball well. This is something that could develop for him over time. The primary tool for the third baseman will be his hitting for average. Expect a consistent bat from Spangenberg in the next few levels. He is a speedy player and has plus potential as a base runner. The reports I have seen on him credits him with average defense and an average arm.

With the Padres:

The Padres went with a very safe pick here, I don’t necessarily see him with a high ceiling in the pros. At best the Padres get a Michael Young type player, someone who will hit singles but do it on a consistent level. Spangenberg hits left and had has played both short and second base. The utility factor will help him climb the minor league system quickly. Don’t expect him to be an All-Star and I think Padres fans will be satisfied with what they picked up.
