Oakland A’s manager Bob Geren was relieved of his duties this afternoon.  The team has announced they will replace Geren with former Manager of the Year Bob Melvin.

Geren, who was never able to deliver a .500 season, compiled a record of 334-376 in his 4 plus seasons with the team.

Oakland has been weakened by injuries all season, especially the pitching staff.  The team will be without Dallas Braden for the rest of the year.  The starter required season ending surgery after sustaining a shoulder injury.

Other starting pitchers Tyson Ross, Brandon McCarthy and Brett Anderson have all spent time on the Athletics disabled list this season.

Oakland looked like it was set to turn things around during the end of May, winning 5 of 6 games.  Unfortunately for Geren and the A’s, the team was unable to sustain the run.  They’ve now lost 9 straight on their way to a record of 27-36.

Melvin has managed 7 seasons in the majors, compiling a record of 493-508.  He has managed the Seattle Mariners and the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Before taking over for the A’s, Melvin was acting as a special baseball advisor for the Diamondbacks.
