Pirates Alvarez Suffers Setback

Third baseman Pedro Alvarez will not be rejoining the now .500 Pirates anytime soon.  The 24 year old suffered a setback during an extended spring training game.  The right quad that sent Alvarez to the disabled list has continued to give him problems.

Alvarez will rest for at least a week before resuming baseball related activities.  Before the injury, Alvarez was close to joining a minor league affiliate to continue his rehab process.

The initial injury can be traced all the way back to May 3rd during a contest against the San Diego Padres.  Alvarez avoided a trip to the DL, only missing 4 games before returning to the Pirates lineup.

Soon after his return, Alvarez reaggravated the injury against the Brewers and was placed on the team’s 15 day disabled list.

In Alvarez’s absence the Pirates have gone with a platoon of former top prospect Brandon Wood and Josh Harrison at third.  Neither has been particularly good this year, as both are sporting OPS’s south of .600.

Pittsburgh will look for the sweep tonight as they finish up their series with the Diamondbacks.
