Concussion Lands Span on DL

The Minnesota Twins have placed centerfielder Denard Span on Major League Baseball’s newly created 7 day disabled list with a mild concussion.  Span was injured last Friday in a game against the Royals.

During the contest, Span collided with Kansas City catcher Brayan Pena as he was sliding into home plate.  Minnesota now says Span sustained a mild concussion along with whiplash during the run in with Pena.

Span was back in the lineup for the Twins this Monday, but felt lightheaded during the game and hasn’t played since.  The 27 year old was examined by specialists this week who determined the extent of the injury.

Span marks the 12th player from the Twins Opening Day roster who’s been placed on the disabled list.  He joins fellow outfielder Jason Kubel.

On the year, Kubel and Span have carried their weak-hitting club.  Without the two, no one on the Twins active roster is batting over .284.  Only one player has an OPS over .700.

Minnesota recalled outfielder Rene Tosoni from Triple-A to replace Span on its roster.
