12th Overall: Brewers Select Taylor Jungmann

The Milwaukee Brewers selected right-handed starting pitcher Taylor Jungmann with the 12th pick of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft. The 6’6″, 220 lb, 21-year-old was a three year starter for the University of Texas. This season Jungmann was  13-1 with a 1.40 ERA and .168 opponent average. Jungmann averaged over 8 innings per start, striking out nearly a batter per 9 while walking nearly 2 batters per 9. The Longhorns pitcher was slotted as the 8th overall pick by Wally Fish in the S2S Mock Draft.

The Mechanics:

Jungmann throws from a low-three-quarter arm slot giving the impression of an almost sidearm delivery. His unorthodox mechanics and high effort delivery often appear violent. Regardless, his solid control and command appear to be unaffected so I wouldn’t be to concerned with it.
The Repertoire:
Jungmann features a plus fastball with solid movement that sits between 93 and 96 mph. His slurve sits between 78 and 84 mph and is effective against both right and left-handed batters. Jungmann also features a solid change-up. He’s poised and confident in his stuff when on the hill. He honestly should should be too with the numbers that he’s put up for the Longhorns.

The Future:
I absolutely love the selection for the Brewers. With three full seasons of college ball, Cape Cod League and College World Series experience under his belt, Jungmann shouldn’t require much time down on the farm.  The Brewers basically drafted an inning eating, flame throwing giant that should be MLB ready in a about a year. The thought of Gallardo, Greinke, Marcum and Jungmann in a rotation must be pretty exciting if you’re a Brewers fan. Solid pickup for the Milwaukee Brewers!

Keep an eye on Taylor Jungmann as he continues down his road to the show.
