Schedule May Force Jeter to DL

I know you can’t get enough Yankee news.

The New York Post is reporting that the Yanks seem to be leaning towards putting team captain Derek Jeter on the 15 day disabled list.  Jeter was removed from last night’s game after straining his calf.

New York’s decision would seem to be based more on their upcoming schedule than Jeter’s condition.  The team is set to start a series with the Texas Rangers, but then will begin a 6 game road trip against the National League.

This confuses things because the Yankees would not be able to simply keep Jeter in the lineup as a designated hitter.  If Jeter were to play, he would have to play the field.

If the team decided to keep Jeter on the active roster, it would limit the options of manager Joe Girardi.

Girardi was noticeably concerned after last night’s 1-0 loss to the Indians.

"“I’m worried about it,” Girardi said of Jeter’s injury. “It’s frustrating. He’s six hits away. You would have hoped that he could have done it in this homestand. For our team it’s frustrating. It’s our leadoff guy. I am not sure what we’re going to discover here, but obviously he looks pretty sore.”"

If Jeter is forced to miss time, the Yankees would likely go with Eduardo Nunez at short and have Brett Gardner fill in as the team’s leadoff hitter.
