Shoulder Could Cost Lowrie Trip to DL

Jed Lowrie’s been having shoulder issues for a few weeks now, and it appears the injury could cost the shortstop some time on the disabled list.  Lowrie is being evaluated today by doctors in Boston to determine the extent of the injury.

The original discomfort that was described as a bruised left shoulder can be traced back to a May 27th collision between Lowrie and teammate Carl Crawford.

Since then, Lowrie’s only been able to muster a .163 batting average and has missed 6 games.

Last night, Lowrie further aggravated the shoulder when he reportedly felt it move in his socket while striking out against Rays’ starter David Price.

"“It’s sore,” Lowrie said.”It felt like it slipped out. It wasn’t out, but it felt like it came out and went back in.”"

When the initial collision took place, I’m sure Boston wanted to see if Lowrie could play through the pain.  Up to that point, the 27 year old had been one of the Red Sox most productive offensive players.

Lowrie destroyed April to the tune of .368/.389/.574, but after coming back down to earth in May he’s only held a mark of .114/.162/.200 this month.

If Lowrie were to land on the DL, Marco Scutaro would take over at short for the Sox.   Drew Sutton could also be recalled for infield depth.
