Phillies Place Madson on DL

The Phillies pen has sustained another blow as the team placed closer Ryan Madson on the 15 day disabled list with a right hand contusion.

Madson last appeared for the Phils June 18th.  He’s been out since dealing with pain in his pitching hand.

The root of the injury can be traced back to a May 20th contest against the Texas Rangers.  Madson was on the bump when a ball off the bat of David Murphy deflected against his right hand.

The 30 year old had been able to continue closing games for the Phils before being sidelined when the hand developed an infection or growth.

Madson’s been excellent for Philadelphia this season, tallying 15 saves in 16 opportunities to go along with his 2.03 ERA.

The right hander becomes the third Phillies closer to hit the DL this season, joining Brad Lidge and Jose ContrerasAntonio Bastardo is the only pitcher on Philadelphia’s active roster that’s recorded a save this season.

To replace Madson, the Phils have called up right hander Andrew Carpenter from Triple-A.
