Rockies Recall Ian Stewart

After their recent spree of injuries, the Colorado Rockies have recalled infielder Ian Stewart from Triple-A.

Stewart has been with the club for two other periods this season.  The 26 year old started the year as a member of the Rockies bench, seeing time mostly at third base while also pinch hitting.  He was demoted in late April after only managing a putrid line of .077/.143/.077 over 12 games.

He came back up to the bigs in May for 9 contests but was actually able to drop his batting average over that span.  Over his 22 games with the Rockies this season, Stewart had 3 hits in 47 at bats.

Now with injuries to Troy Tulowitzki and Carlos Gonzalez, the Rockies need a little depth and made the move to recall Stewart.

Stewart has played second and third base over his career, but the Rockies have Ty Wigginton and the newly acquired Mark Ellis manning those positions.  So it’s unclear how much time on the field Stewart will see.

Since his awful beginning of the year with Colorado, Stewart has put up an OPS of .937 in Triple-A.  He’s hit 14 home runs and driven in 41 RBIs during his 44 games in the minors.
