Jose Reyes Headed for DL

The Mets will be without Jose Reyes for longer than originally expected.  It’s being reported that New York is preparing to place their star shortstop on the 15 day disabled list.

Doctor’s are recommending that Reyes sit out three weeks to allow his hamstring time to heal properly.

Reyes has been out since July 2nd with a strained hamstring.  The injury occurred while Reyes was running the bases this weekend against the Yankees.  After his hamstring tightened up, the shortstop was removed from the game before the start of the 3rd inning.

The diagnosis was originally positive for the Mets.  It was revealed that Reyes was only dealing with a Grade 1 strain, the least severe.

But as the week’s progressed, Reyes has become limited to the point where the shortstop was unable to perform any activities Wednesday.  He assumed that based on how he was feeling he would be restricted again on Thursday.

New York was originally hoping to simply keep a short bench until the All-Star break so that Reyes could use the time off to recover and return to action for the Mets immediately as play resumed.  If Reyes is now placed on the DL, he will not be able to rejoin the team until after their first post-All-Star game series.

Reyes realizes that because his hamstring is not responding as trainers had hoped, he may be forced to miss more extensive time.

"“We have to see what is going to be the best-case scenario for me,” said Reyes. “If I have to go (to the DL), if I really need to go, I have to do it.”"

The 28 year old has been a beast this season.  Reyes has maintained a line of .354/.398/.529 over his 80 games played and leads the league in batting average, hits and triples.

It’s looking like the Mets will make utility man Nick Evans Reyes’ roster replacement.  Sources are saying he is set to join the team in Los Angeles for the Mets finale with the Dodgers.
