After being removed from Saturday’s contest, White Sox catcher Ramon Castro has been placed on the disabled list with a fractured right hand and index finger.
Castro sustained the injury when he was hit by a passed ball thrown by Mark Buehrle. Castro made an attempt at the pitch but missed and the ball hit his right hand. The 35 year old will at least be out a few weeks while nursing the broken hand.
Castro was the White Sox backup catcher, and he was certainly able to deliver in that role for Chicago. Over his 23 games with the club this season, Castro has 7 extra base hits and 10 RBIs. Thought it’s only over 68 at bats, Castro is currently sporting the 15th best OPS and 8th top slugging percentage among major league catchers.
To replace Castro on their roster, the White Sox have called up backstop Tyler Flowers. The 25 year old has spent his entire 2011 as a member of Chicago’s Triple-A affiliate.
Over 65 minor league games, Flowers has been able to put up an OPS of .890 with 15 home runs and 32 RBIs. Flower’s most impressive mark has been his on base percentage of .390.
