Not wanting to take any chances, the Angels have placed center fielder Peter Bourjos on the 15 day disabled list with a sore right hamstring.
"“He’s making progress, but not enough progress to where we could project him to play this weekend or even the beginning of next week,” Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. “Hamstrings are a different animal. Speed is so critical to his game, it makes sense to wait until next Saturday.”"
Bourjos has been out since July 7th when he strained his hamstring during a contest against the Mariners. The Angels called up top prospect Mike Trout and it looked like Bourjos was heading to the DL.
But LA held off on the roster move, hoping that a combination of a weekend off and the All-Star break would allow Bourjos to avoid an extended trip on the disabled list.
However, the leg isn’t responding as hoped and the Angels have decided to make send Bourjos to the DL.
"“I felt really good when I got there,” Bourjos said. “Now, I have to sit and watch. That’s where I’m at right now, cheering on the guys. We’ll rest it and get back on the strengthening, build up gradually and see how it goes. I hope to be back out there a week from Saturday. You have to be careful with a hamstring, and that’s what we’re doing.”"
The speedy center fielder has been solid for the Angels this season. In his 86 games with the club Bourjos has posted a line of .272/.323/.397 with 24 extra base hits and 11 stolen bases.
To replace Bourjos, Trout made the jump from Double-A to starting center fielder in the Majors. The 21 year old has only collected 2 hits over his first 13 major league at bats.
LA recalled Alexi Amarista to fill their open roster spot. He will be used as a backup primarily at second base and in left field.
