Jose Reyes made positive strides towards returning to the Mets Saturday.MLB.com reported that the shortstop was able to successfully run in a straight line and participate in batting practice today.
Reyes’s next step will be rounding the bases at full speed, which he should be cleared to do now that he’s shown his ability to run in straight lines. New York is set to reevaluate Reyes after his workout tomorrow to see if he will join David Wright on rehab assignment or return to the majors.
Reyes has been out since July 2nd when he felt his leg tighten up on the base paths. He was later diagnosed with a Grade 1 strain in his hamstring. New York originally listed him as day-to-day but Reyes was ultimately forced to the disabled list. He is eligible to return Monday.
New York was 46-43 before a 3 game losing streak that landed them at .500 and 8.5 games back in the Wild Card race. A healthy Reyes and Wright would go a long way in helping their diminishing playoff chances.
Before the injury, Reyes was one of the hottest hitters in the league. On July 2nd, Reyes led the league in hits and batting average and took a line of .354/.389/.529 with him to the DL.
