Carlos Guillen made his season debut yesterday as the Tigers activated their second baseman from the 60 day disabled list.

Guillen has been out for 10 months following microfracture surgery on his left knee.  His last appearance for the Tigers came in August of 2010.

The 35 year old rehabbed this winter and recently played 16 games in the minors while on injury assignment.  During his time between three levels, Guillen posted a line of .281/.349/.421 with 6 extra base hits and 10 RBIs.

"“[I wanted to] make sure I’m 100 percent,” Guillen said. “I had like 10 months where I haven’t played every day. You need to get some at-bats, feel comfortable at the plate, feel comfortable in the field.”"

Detroit wanted to be cautious with Guillen and will continue to take it slow and monitor their infielder.

"“He’s going to play second base, but once again, he hasn’t played for quite a while,” Tigers’ manager Jim Leyland said. “How much do I play him in a row? How’s he feeling? He had a pretty serious surgery and that’s why it took so long, obviously, to come back. We haven’t dealt with any surgeries like that, the exact type of thing he had. How fresh is he? How much can he play? How effective can he play? That’s something that we’re going to obviously be looking at.”"

Guillen is a lifetime .286 hitting with a career OPS of .801.  He hit seventh while manning second base for the Tigers last night, going 1 for 4 at the plate.
