Chris Coghlan Faces Rehab Setback

Chris Coghlan’s season struggles continue as knee problems have once again forced the outfielder to the sidelines.

Coghlan played in 5 games while on minor league rehab assignment before the Marlins decided to shut him down.  The 26 year old was experiencing discomfort in the knee that required season ending surgery last July and sent Coghlan to the disabled list this year.

Florida hopes that more rest and further treatment will allow Coghlan to return to full health.

Coghlan sustained the injury in a slightly embarrassing manner.  While celebrating a walk-off victory last season, Coghlan hit Wes Helms in the face with the infamous shaving crème pie and somehow managed to destroy his knee in the process.

The injury has clearly impacted Coghlan’s play this year, as he’s only managed an OPS of .664.

After starting the season off strong in April, Coghlan’s play deteriorated to the point where the Marlins were considering optioning him to the minors before his injury was discovered.

Coghlan broke onto the scene in 2009 when he posted a line of .321/.390/.460 with 46 extra base hits and 84 runs scored in 128 games with the Marlins.  The solid season earned Coghlan NL Rookie of the Year honors and even some MVP consideration.
