Grady Sizemore Placed on DL with Knee Injury

After exiting Sunday’s loss to the Orioles in the first inning, Grady Sizemore found his way back to a familiar place yesterday.  Cleveland placed their center fielder on the disabled list Monday with an injured right knee.

Sizemore sustained the injury while hustling for a double Sunday.  He looked to be in discomfort approaching second before diving head first into the bag.  Sizemore then paced behind in shallow center while the training staff looked over him.

The decision was finally made to lift Sizemore from the game.  He later said that the pain is similar to that he experienced last season.

"“There’s a lot of concern,” Sizemore said Monday morning. “I just hope I don’t have to go through what I went through last year.”"

What Sizemore went through last year was season ending microfracture surgery on his opposite knee.  The procedure sidelined the 28 year old for 10 months.

Monday marked the third time Sizemore has hit the DL this season.  He began the year on the shelf and then returned in the middle of May with a bone bruise on the same knee that’s currently giving him issues.

"“He’s devastated,” manager Manny Acta said. “He’s a guy who really takes it hard when he’s not out there with his guys. You’ve got to have a lot of respect for the guy. He plays through pain all the time. He’s done that over the last three years pretty much here. It is very hard for him not to be out there with his teammates. And it’s hard for us, too. He’s such an important part of our team and our clubhouse and everything.”"

Cleveland called up pitcher David Huff to replace Sizemore on their roster.  Huff took the mound in the first game of today’s double header against the Twins, picking up the win after tossing 7 scoreless innings.
