The Rangers have announced that center fielder Julio Borbon is expected to miss four to six weeks after undergoing successful surgery on his left ankle.
Performed by Dr. John M. Crates, the procedure was to repair ligaments that were damaged when Borbon slid into second base on July 8th. The speedster had to be carted off the field.
Borbon had been with the Rangers Triple-A club since the beginning of June to make room for Texas’s current center fielder Endy Chavez.
In 32 games with the Rangers this season, Borbon put up a line of .270/.305/.348. He spent the same amount of time in Triple-A, where he was able to post an OPS of .811 with 14 extra base hits and RBIs and 16 stolen bases.
Texas expects the 25 year old to begin baseball related activities in 6 weeks. The ankle injury marked Borbon’s second trip to the disabled list this season, as the center fielder had also been shelved by a strained left hamstring.
Meanwhile Chavez, Borbon’s replacement, has been spectacular for the Rangers this season. Since being called up in the middle of May, the 33 year old has hit .342 with 13 extra base hits and RBIs. After coming back down to earth a bit in June, Chavez is back to his torrid pace in July. He’s hit in 8 of 10 games while posting an OPS of .987 this month.
