Mariners Trade Ryan Langerhans; Designate Jack Cust

Seattle made all kinds of moves today, all of the minor variety.  They dealt outfielder Ryan Langerhans to the Diamondbacks for the ever popular cash considerations, allowing the team to add another outfielder, Wily Mo Pena, to their Triple-A squad.

The larger news for the Mariners is the return of lefty starter Erik Bedard, whose activation came at the expense of Jack Cust who was designated for assignment today.

Langerhans spent 19 games in the majors this season with the Mariners, and he only managed an OPS of .663.  The 31 year old’s spent a majority of 2011 in Triple-A, where he had much more success.

Pena was designated for assignment two weeks ago by the Diamondbacks after only holding an OBP of .196 over 17 games.  Still, the slugger was able to show off his power in his short stint with Arizona, tallying 5 home runs in only 46 at bats.

Bedard is set to make his much awaited return, and Cust was designated to make room for him.  He can’t complain much as he’s hit .213 with 87 strike outs over 67 games this season.

But someone will likely give him another look if he doesn’t stick with the Mariners due to his career OBP of .374.  Cust has drawn over 90 walks 3 times in his career, leading to his solid career OPS of .813.
