Rickie Weeks to DL; Brewers Acquire Felipe Lopez

The Brewers have placed All-Star second baseman Rickie Weeks on the disabled list with a severely sprained ankle.  Milwaukee then went out and acquired infielder Felipe Lopez from the Tampa Bay Rays, and continue to show interest in several middle infielders as the deadline approaches.

Weeks suffered the injury during the Brewers Wednesday night game against the Cubs.  The 28 year old was trying to leg out an infield single when he landed awkwardly at first.  After he was called safe, Weeks immediately went to the ground in pain.

While the injury appeared to be very severe, it was reported Thursday morning that Weeks would not require surgery.  Milwaukee expects to be without their second baseman for 2 to 6 weeks.

Weeks is tops among all second baseman with 19 home runs to go along with a line of .272/.346/.478 on the year.

Milwaukee replaced Weeks with Triple-A second baseman Eric Farris.  For now it will be up to Farris, Craig Counsell and Josh Wilson to cover second for the Brew Crew.

Those names sound about as appealing to the Brewers front office as they probably do to you, and the club is looking to improve their middle infield depth.  Milwaukee took a step in that direction by acquiring Lopez from the Rays for cash considerations.

Lopez was with the Rays for 32 games this season while spending a majority of his time with their Triple-A affiliate.  He’s hit .305 with 18 extra base hits and 37 RBI’s over 48 games in the minors this year.

The 31 year old will report to the Brewers Triple-A club and will be evaluated from there.  With the suddenness of Weeks’ injury, Milwaukee will continue to search for options to fill the void he left.
