Lyle Overbay Designated for Assignment

To make room for recent trade acquisition Derrek Lee, the Pittsburgh Pirates have designated Lyle Overbay for assignment.

Overbay joined the Pirates this offseason on a 1 year $5 million deal, but the 34 year old hasn’t been able to live up to his contract.  Over 103 games with Pittsburgh, Overbay has only posted a line of .227/.300/.349 with 8 home runs and 37 RBI’s.

The first baseman really hasn’t been successful during any part of the 2011 season, but had been especially awful (.598 OPS) in July.

Overbay could find a home as a bench or platoon player for the rest of the season, as the lefty has a career .822 OPS against right handed pitching.
