Arthur Rhodes Designated for Assignment

Arthur Rhodes has been designated for assignment by the Rangers to make room for recent acquisition Mike Adams.

Texas went out this weekend and added two solid bullpen arms in Adams and fellow setup man Koji Uehara.  Unfortunately for Rhodes, their presence made him expendable in the eyes of Texas.

The 41 year old hasn’t exactly helped his cause this season with an ERA of 4.81 over 24.1 innings.  This year the lefty’s hits per 9 are way up while his strike out numbers are way down which is never considered to be a winning combination.

Rhodes signed a 1 year $3.9 million deal with the Rangers this January after spending two successful seasons in the Reds’ pen.  During his time in Cincinnati, Rhodes posted an ERA of 2.42 with a WHIP below 1.07 in 108.1 innings.

But he wasn’t able to carry the success over to the AL.  In 2011, batters have hit at a clip of .289/.343/.546 off of Rhodes.

Still, with his recent success and generally solid numbers against lefties this year (.216 batting average) Rhodes figures to get another opportunity to pitch in the majors this season.
