Yadier Molina Suspended 5 Games for “Spittle” Incident

Cardinals’ catcher Yadier Molina has been suspended 5 games by the league after his “spitting” incident and resulting ejection from Tuesday night’s game against the Brewers.

Molina was tossed in the 10th inning of the contest after arguing a called third strike with umpire Rod Drake.  The catcher disagreed boy did he let Drake know it, yelling emphatically at the ump and bumping into him several different times.

But what really seems to have caught the league’s attention is their accusation that Molina sprayed Drake twice in the face with spittle during the confrontation.  Molina denies that he intentionally spit on the umpire, and I tend to believe him.  Still, Drake made a point of wiping his face several times during the incident.

Teammates and third base coach Jose Oquendo had to restrain Molina before he finally left the field.  He issued this statement today regarding the event.

"“I am sorry for my actions and apologize for letting my emotions get the best of me,” said Molina. “I want everyone to know that I would never intentionally spit on another person and that I have great respect for the umpires and the job they do. I accept full responsibility for my actions and will begin serving my suspension tonight.”"

Molina has decided not to appeal the decision and will begin serving his suspension tonight.
