Daniel Murphy Likely Out for Season

The New York Mets have announced that infielder Daniel Murphy is headed for the disabled list with a sprained MCL.  Though surgery does not appear necessary, Murphy is still likely to miss the remainder of this season.

Murphy was injured in the top of the 7th inning during yesterday’s contest against the Braves.  He was manning second base when Jose Constanza attempted to steal.  Murphy covered the bag and Constanza slid leg first, connecting with Murphy’s knee and causing it to buckle.  The 26 year old hobbled to the outfield before lying on the ground in obvious pain.  Trainers and coaches saw to Murphy who was ultimately helped off the field.

X-rays revealed no fractures and an MRI later determined that Murphy has sustained an MCL sprain.  Knee problems in his other leg caused him to miss the entire 2010 season.

The injury likely brings an end to what’s been a successful season for Murphy.  So far this year he has hit at a clip of .320/.362/.448 with 36 extra base hits and 49 RBI’s while playing first, second and third base.

New York has yet to announce the status of their other player injured Sunday, Jose Reyes.  Word is expected later today on how much if any time Reyes will miss.
