The Giants have placed outfielder Andres Torres on the disabled list with a right leg contusion. In a corresponding roster move, San Francisco recalled Brandon Belt from Triple-A.
Torres last appeared for the Giants Friday when he went 0-3 against the Marlins. Giants’ manager Bruce Bochy told reporters that Torres sustained the injury when he fouled a pitch off his leg and, while the injury isn’t that serious, he didn’t want to limit his bench any more than it already was.
"“We’re too shorthanded right now, so instead of waiting, we went ahead and made the move and brought Brandon to help us out,” Bochy said. “[Brandon] gives us a left-handed bat. He’ll help Aubrey [Huff] at first base and occasionally some outfield, too.”"
This is Belt’s third stint with the Giants. In 31 games with the team he’s posted a line of .218/.322/.333. He’s spent more time with San Fran’s Triple-A club this season, maintaining a .975 OPS over 49 games.
"“He’s going to come up and help,” Bochy said. “When you have a young player, you want to get him in there as much as you can, but at the same time, you have your veterans you still believe in. I will say I’ll do all I can to get his at-bats in there, because I think we need some help, and now it’s going to be up to Brandon to handle this well and get off some good at-bats.”"
