Another Dan Uggla multi-hit effort wasn’t enough to propel the Braves past the Cubs last night, but it did continue the slugger’s unexpected streak through the record books.
Uggla went 2-3 in his 5 plate appearances last night, and it only took him one at bat to extend his run to 33 games. After singling in the first, Uggla hit a solo shot, got hit by a pitch, flied out and walked to finish up his evening.
Now that he’s broken the Braves’ record for most consecutive games with a hit, Uggla can turn his attention to the all-time list where his streak of 33 places him in a tie for 19th.
But, Uggla credits his ability to continue hitting night in and night out because he avoids the habit of record gazing. Instead, Uggla tries to concentrate on doing his part to help his team win each game and just lets the rest play out as it may.
"“My focus isn’t on trying to continue the streak,” Uggla said. “My focus is on winning and doing everything I can to help this team win ballgames. I guess when you have that sort of attitude, it takes the focus off something you shouldn’t be focused on anyways.”"
Uggla now has three consecutive multi-hit games, 6 total this month. So far in August he’s been able to hit at a ridiculous clip of .457/.490/.913 with 7 home runs and 14 RBI’s. Uggla’s OPS has risen from .711 to .753 over his past three games.
