Dan Uggla’s unexpected stretch finally came to an end Sunday as the second baseman went 0-3, ending his hit streak at 33 games.
Twice during yesterday’s game it looked like Uggla may have extended the streak. In the first inning he hit what appeared to be a broken bat single, but Alfonso Soriano was able to make the catch.
Uggla went on to pop out in the third inning before getting about as close to a hit as you can get in the 5th.
Popping a pitch up to shallow right, the ball looked sure to drop in as right fielder Tyler Colvin wasn’t in position to make the play. Just when it seemed Uggla’s streak would be extended, Cubs’ second baseman Darwin Barney raced in and made the diving grab.
"“It was a fun run,” Uggla said. “But all things have to come to and end some time. From where I was, it was a battle. I’m sure I’ll look back and be pretty proud of what I did. That was more games than I ever expected to have in a row.”"
While he was short of the Braves franchise record, the 33 games broke Atlanta’s record for consecutive games with a hit. During the streak, the 31 year old raised his batting line from .173/.241/.327 when he started to .231/.297/.450 after Sunday’s 0-3.
