The Logan Morrison saga continues as the 23 year old is now considering filing a grievance against the Florida Marlins for their decision to demote him to the Minor Leagues.
Morrison was not satisfied with the answer that his current struggles at the plate were the reason for his demotion. His agent stated that together they will “explore this and contact the union and make sure Logan’s rights are protected”. The pair doesn’t believe that things add up, and do not seem ready to back down and take the demotion quietly.
Many figured from the beginning that Morrison being sent down had more to do with what he was doing off the field than his production at the plate. The former top prospect is quick to share his opinion and has criticized the Marlins’ front office as well as his own teammates this season.
Morrison’s latest altercation with Marlins’ brass took place Saturday afternoon when he refused to attend a meet-and-greet with the team’s season ticket holders. While that may sound a little childish and/or disrespectful, Morrison decided to sit out the session because he was upset over a charity event that went awry earlier in the week.
The outfielder had also already attended an autograph signing earlier in the day, and consulted with his team’s union rep, Wes Helms, before deciding to sit out the meet-and-greet. Marlins’ reporter Joe Capozzi believes this event may have been one of the underlying reasons for Morrison’s demotion.
While the Marlins are sticking with their original statement of offensive inefficiency causing the demotion, Florida’s President of Baseball Operation Larry Beinfest said that Morrison “just needs to concentrate on baseball and all aspects of being a major leaguer” before rejoining the team.
Morrison’s numbers aren’t great, and he’s been struggling enough that he and the MLBPA aren’t likely to win any ruling if this does turn into a case. But, it is obvious that the 23 year old is seriously upset about the situation and it now has many beginning to wonder how far this thing will go.
