David Ortiz Likely to Miss Week of Action
David Ortiz is hoping to rejoin the Red Sox lineup next week as he’s been sidelined by a case of bursitis in his right heel. The discomfort has been nagging Ortiz for some time now, and he’s hoping a few days off will curb the pain.
Big Papi received medication this weekend that helped his heel for a few days, but the pain was back and the club’s decided it best for him to take a few more games off.
“The day off was all right, but yesterday, I couldn’t run,” said Ortiz. “I was limping really bad. I finally came to the doctor, [and he] checked me out. … We’re just going to get some treatment. It’s not anything crazy.”
Ortiz is currently sporting a protective boot which he will remain wearing for a few more days. Team doctors noted that this discomfort is normal in athletes or anyone who exercises in general, and the slugger is relieved that he isn’t dealing with a larger problem.
Papi has again been one of the league’s best designated hitters. He’s leading all DH’s with 24 home runs and is second in doubles (30) and RBI’s (79). This year for the Sox, Ortiz has hit at a clip of .300/.388/.557.
In Ortiz’s absence, Boston’s manager Terry Francona has decided to use his DH position to rest starters. Jed Lowrie and Carl Crawford filled the role last night, and Adrian Gonzalez is looking like this evening’s candidate since he’s nursing a sore neck.
