Brian Wilson Out with Elbow Inflammation

Brian Wilson is expected to miss at least a few days of action while dealing with inflammation in his right elbow.  The Giants’ closer became the latest update for a team that’s been hampered by injuries all season long.

Wilson went to see specialist Dr. James Andrews Wednesday, a trip no pitcher ever hopes to make.  But the diagnosis wasn’t severe, as only minor inflammation was discovered.

Wilson decided the visit was necessary after he experienced discomfort in his throwing arm during Monday’s game.  Things still didn’t feel right Tuesday, and decided it best to make sure nothing was seriously wrong.

The Beard has not been nearly as dominant in 2011 as he was last season for the Giants.  While he’s been able to convert 35 of his 40 save opportunities, the 29 year old has an ERA and WHIP of 3.19 and 1.49 compared to 2010’s marks of 1.81 and 1.18.

It seems Wilson’s largest issue this season has been his command.  His SO/9 ratio is only 8.7 compared to last year’s 11.2, and he’s been walking more than 5 batters per 9 innings.

San Francisco’s pen is seriously short staffed at the moment, as its setup man Sergio Romo hit the disabled list earlier this week.  Romo was also dealing with inflammation in his throwing elbow.
