Freddy Garcia Set to Return Tonight for Yankees

The New York Yankees will welcome Freddy Garcia back to their starting rotation tonight.  Garcia will be activated from the 15 day disabled list Monday and take the hill for the Yankees this evening in their game against the Orioles.

Garcia last pitched for the Yankees August 7th, but wasn’t placed on the DL until the 19th.  New York made the roster move to allow Garcia’s cut on his throwing hand time to heal.

After resting the sliced finger for the weekend, Garcia made a rehab appearance last Monday with the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate.  Garcia worked 4 innings and threw 59 pitches, allowing 2 earned runs on 8 hits with one walk and no strike outs.

Garcia signed a Minor League deal with the Yankees this offseason, but has turned out to be one of the club’s best starting pitchers in 2011.  On the year, Garcia has made 21 appearances for New York, logging 122.1 innings.  Over that span, Garcia has maintained a 3.16 ERA and WHIP of 1.31.

New York is hoping Garcia can add a boost to a Yankees pitching staff that’s struggled of late.  Heading into yesterday’s double header with Baltimore, New York’s pitchers have given up nearly 6 runs a game over their last 11.
