Andrew McCutchen Day-to-Day with Bone Contusion

After taking a pitch to the hand during yesterday’s game, Pittsburgh Pirates center fielder Andrew McCutchen is being listed as day-to-day by the club.

During the first inning of Friday’s contest against the Cubs, McCutchen was drilled on the top of his left hand by Ryan Dempster. McCutchen stayed in the game long enough to run the bases but didn’t take the field in the bottom of the 1st.

McCutchen immediately thought the worst, but X-rays later revealed no fracture.  Instead, McCutchen was diagnosed with a bone contusion and is only expected to miss a couple of days.

Though the Pirates have dropped out of NL Central race, McCutchen has continued to provide Pittsburgh fans with something to get excited about.  On the year, the 24 year old has hit at a clip of .271/.372/.469 with 20 home runs, 31 doubles, 81 RBI’s and 20 stolen bases.

This impressive stat line combined with his above average defense has earned McCutchen the 15th best WAR (5.4) among Major League position players according to Fan Graphs.  Pittsburgh hopes McCutchen can return to action as soon as Sunday.
