Johan Santana Resumes Rehab Assignment

Johan Santana will take another shot at a Minor League rehab assignment today when he takes the mound for the New York Mets Single-A affiliate.

The Mets were hoping to have Santana return for the last month of the season before the left-hander faced a setback during his first rehab stint.  After making one start for the St. Lucie Mets in late July, Santana was scratched before his next appearance due to shoulder discomfort.

After taking a few days off, Santana’s discomfort was diagnosed as shoulder fatigue.  Though it stalled Santana’s return, the news was positive for the Mets, as it wasn’t another serious arm injury.

Now, after continuing the rehab process, Santana is again ready to face live hitters.  The 32 year old is expected to throw 2 innings or 40 pitches today, whichever comes first.

New York has no reason to rush Santana back to the Majors this season. But, general manager Sandy Alderson did mention there’s a slim possibility Santana returns to the Mets at the end of the year.
