Hanley Ramirez Set for Season Ending Surgery

Hanley Ramirez has received a recommendation to undergo season ending surgery to repair his injured right shoulder.

Dr. Lee Kaplan, the Florida Marlins’ team physician, passed along his recommendation to Ramirez when the two met this week.  No date has been set, and the club is still deciding on what treatment is best for Ramirez.

Whatever path is chosen, the procedure will sideline Ramirez for the rest of this season, but the short stop should be ready to go in 2012.

Ramirez has been out since the beginning of August with a sprained right shoulder.  He sustained the injury while attempting to make a diving catch during a game against the New York Mets.

Ramirez has dealt with similar issues in the past.  In 2007, Ramirez had arthroscopic surgery performed on the same right shoulder that has caused him to miss the last month of action.

It originally looked like Ramirez may return to the Marlins this season, as he was set to begin a Minor League rehab assignment last weekend.  But, Ramirez was removed from the game after experiencing more discomfort in his shoulder.

2011 hasn’t been kind to Ramirez, as the slugger is on pace to finish the year having only played 92 games for the Marlins.  It will be the first time that Ramirez has played in less than 142 games since joining the Marlins in 2006.

Not only has Ramirez missed significant time this season, but the three time All-Star hasn’t been very effective when he has been on the field.  Hampered by a back injury along with his shoulder problems, Ramirez has only managed to put up a line of .243/.333/.379 this season.  These stats fall far below Ramirez’s career line of .306/.380/.506.
