Josh Beckett Diagnosed with Sprained Ankle

Boston Red Sox fans everywhere were presented with good news regarding Josh Beckett’s injured right ankle during last night’s game against the Toronto Blue Jays.  Red Sox medical director Dr. Tom Gill announced that Beckett is only dealing with a ankle strain.

Gill said that an MRI revealed the sprain but, more importantly, didn’t show any signs of injury involving Beckett’s Achilles or other tendons.  As of now, Beckett is only scheduled to miss one start.  He will then be reevaluated to see how the ankle is responding to treatment.

Beckett was injured during Sunday’s game against the Blue Jays.  After cruising through 3 innings, Beckett exited the contest in the 4th, experiencing discomfort in his right ankle.

It was concerning for the right-hander because, as Beckett put it, the injury occurred to his “power leg”.  But the result of yesterday’s meeting was positive and the Red Sox are expected to only be without Beckett for a start or two.

That’s certainly important when you consider what Beckett has done this season.  On the year, Beckett is 12-5 with a 2.49 ERA over his 27 starts for the Red Sox.

Boston will send Kyle Weiland to the mound Saturday to fill in for Beckett.  It will mark the 24 year old’s 3rd start of the season.

So far in 2011, Weiland has a 6.75 ERA in his 3 appearances for the Red Sox.  The right-hander spent most of the season in Triple-A, where he managed a 3.58 earned run average over 24 starts.
