The Florida Marlins called up Minor League third baseman Matt Dominguez in time for last night’s game against the New York Mets. Dominguez is considered by many to be the Marlins top prospect.
Dominguez, who entered the season as one of Baseball America’s 100 best prospects, began his 2011 with the Marlins Triple-A affiliate. In his 95 games in the Minors, Dominguez hit at a clip of .249/.309/.405 with 1 home run, 12 doubles and 58 RBI’s.
These numbers were a little below Dominguez’s career averages, but the Marlins are nonetheless excited to have their 2007 first round draft pick in the Majors to see what he can do.
Florida manager Jack McKeon said that the club plans on easing Dominguez into action. The skipper planned to give Dominguez Tuesday night off. But, as the game extended into extra innings, Dominguez was called upon to pinch hit in the 10th.
Dominguez didn’t receive the warmest welcome to the Majors. With the count 1-2, Mets reliever Pedro Beato tried to come up and in on Dominguez but instead hit him.
