Alex Rodriguez Again Sidelined by Thumb Injury

Alex Rodriguez’s thumb is continuing to give him trouble, and the New York Yankees have decided to give their slugger three or four days off to rest the injury.

Rodriguez originally hurt his thumb on the first day that he returned from his lengthy stint on the disabled list in August.  After missing a month and a half following knee surgery, Rodriguez went on to injure his left thumb in his first game back with the Yankees.

Rodriguez sustained the injury while lunging for a hard hit ball off the bat of Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer.  After taking two days off, Rodriguez returned for three games before again being sidelined due to discomfort in his thumb.

While he knows he will have to play through different “bumps and bruises” during a long MLB season, Rodriguez says that the thumb has become more than that.  The Yankees hope that a few additional days off allows the discomfort Rodriguez is experiencing to become more manageable.

The thumb has noticeably impacted Rodriguez since his return.  After his activation from the disabled list, Rodriguez has only gone 7 for 36 (.194) with 2 extra base hits.

Even though he’s dealt with his fair share of injuries this season, Rodriguez has turned in a respectable performance at the plate for the Yankees.  On the year, Rodriguez has hit at a clip of .284/.367/.475 with 15 home runs, 20 doubles and 56 RBI’s.
