Chase Utley has been cleared to rejoin the Philadelphia Phillies and is likely to make his return Thursday night when the club begins its 10 game home stand.
Utley has been out since last Wednesday after he was hit by a pitch in the back of the helmet. Utley originally seemed ok but later reported feeling dizzy. He was removed from the game and ultimately diagnosed with a concussion.
After passing a concussion test Saturday, Utley was able to resume baseball related activities. After exerting himself for the weekend, Utley was again examined on Monday to see how his body responded.
The results were again positive and Utley has been cleared to return to action. Philadelphia had a three game set in Houston from Monday through today, so the Phillies decided to wait until they returned home tomorrow to bring Utley back.
While his season has been hampered by injuries, causing his numbers to be less than stellar, Utley is nonetheless an important piece for the Phillies. He provides veteran leadership and postseason experience along with his career line of .291/.377/.508.
