Francisco Cervelli Out with Concussion Symptoms

Francisco Cervelli has hit the New York Yankees 15 day disabled list.  Cervelli is still dealing with symptoms from the concussion he suffered last week.

During the Yankees September 8th game against the Baltimore Orioles, Cervelli was leveled at the plate by outfielder Nick Markakis.  Since the collision, Cervelli has been dealing with dizziness and headaches.

Cervelli underwent an MRI exam that showed no damage to his head.  Still, Cervelli was diagnosed with the third concussion of his career.

In order to return for the Yankees, Cervelli must pass concussion tests.  Until then, Cervelli will not be able to participate in any baseball related activities.

At this point, Cervelli is resting at his home.  The Yankees are not sure when he will return.

On the year, Cervelli has hit .266/.324/.395 with 8 extra base hits and 22 RBI’s in his 43 games played.

While Cervelli’s just the Yankees fill in backstop, this will be a cause for concern for New York as it prepares for the playoffs.  If Cervelli is not able to go for their opening postseason series, the Yankees will have to decide on another backup catcher behind starter Russell Martin.

Jesus Montero has been the club’s top catching prospect for several seasons now and may seem the logical choice.  But New York likes Montero as a DH option, as the 21 year old has raked over his first 9 games (.333/.412/.667).

If the Yankees are using Montero as their backup catcher that would take him out of the mix as the club’s designated hitter.  The only other catcher on the Yankees current roster is Austin Romine who started his first Major League game last night.
